Your story reminds me a bit of my parents who got married and moved to 10 remote acres in Alaska to "live off the land."

Oh, I'd love to hear about that! Several times in my life I thought that if it didn't work out, one might find me in Alaska -- even though I've never been there.

When we left our homestead in Hungary (in part for political reasons...) we literally walked away with all we could fit in our backpacks, plus Csermely in the mei tai carrier. Oddly enough, we'd still like to buy the land back someday.
