as i sit here eating cheese
and listen to the fire crackle
all i can think of is fall

birds are quieter, they don't make much commotion,
it's just the occasional crow cawing their misgivings,
and messages to each other 
and the world

leaves are turning orange, mottled yellow and spotted brow…
