Nature photo of the day: hummingbird hawk moth enjoying zinnia blossoms, but you already knew that!
there's a flying, furry creature in the garden with a lobster-like tail hovering about the zinnia blossoms without a worry in the world as it zips from one wondrous yellow treat to another sipping the delectable nectar with a magical tube-like tongue that is as long as its body, or longer, as it flits and flies it's hard to imagine siphoning my own food at such a speed as this moth flies feeding on spells and sorcery to stay alive - Cheryl M.
It’s September 8th and fall is definitely under foot. The many flowers in the garden are still keeping the bountiful insects busy.
Not only here on the zinnias, but the spearmint is still buzzing with excitement, the nasturtiums attract their own varied clientele too.
Lately we’ve noticed that hummingbird hawk moths are extremely active on the sunflowers, and we couldn’t be more pleased to see them!

They are a little hard for my old camera to catch, though we’ve tried our best — nothing beats seeing, listening and feeling their “wind” in person. They are so gentle you can even put your open palm right under them and they will hover above, if only for a second before moving onto the next best blossom. To the best of my remembrance this is the first year we’ve seen these beautifully soft moths on our homestead.
Are insects flourishing in your garden this year? Or are you experiencing a temporary decline in their numbers? Let us know in the comments below!
As for the journal prompt of the day:
What’s the most memorable insect I’ve ever seen?
Describe the creature with as much detail as possible, in words, or perhaps even in a drawing. If you are feeling particularly inspired, write an ode to that memorable insect in the form of a poem.
In other words:
September is generally “back-to-school” for a good number of people, either as students, teachers, parents or grand-parents of those pupils.
Our take on schooling is different, to say the least, yet we feel deep in our hearts that education is never-ending.
So, rather than have a back-to-school sale, we’re having a BACK-TO-NATURE sale in our Etsy shop. All earth gratitude journals and nature prints are 50% off until September 14th.
We do hope you’ll stop on by!
With warm autumn greetings from the garden,
Cheryl
